Void detection in foam with knit lines using THz pulse interrogation

چکیده
We model electromagnetic interrogation of a polyurethane foam using the TE mode of the 2D Maxwell’s equations reduced to the wave equation for a fixed frequency in the THz regime. The foam block target contains knit lines which are modeled by modifying the speed of propagation, i.e., by altering the index of refraction. We describe our efforts to estimate the dielectric constant in the knit lines, as well as in the surrounding foam, by use of the classical Clausius–Mossotti equation, assuming only a change in density. We compare the numerical simulations accounting for knit lines to those in which knit lines are neglected, each in the context of modeling reflections of plane waves in foam with voids.

Pulsed Thz Interrogation of Sofi with Knit Lines in 2d
This paper examines the scattering effect of knit lines and voids in SOFI through simulations of THz interrogation at normal and non-normal angles of incidence and using focused and non-focused single-cycle plane waves. We model the electromagnetic field using the TE mode of the 2D Maxwell’s equations reduced to a wave equation, which are then solved with a finite-element time-domain method. Th...
متن کاملChanges in signal transmission speed in coaxial cables through regulating the foam structure of the polyethylene dielectric section
Polyolefins have been widely used in the electrical insulation and cable industry in recent years. One of the main usages of these materials is dielectric insulation in coaxial cables. Low attenuation and high signal transmission speed are among the desired features in coaxial cables. The role of polyethylene foam on signal transmission speed in the coaxial cables is the main focus of this stud...
متن کاملVoid Detection in Complex Geometries
We present results from our computational efforts to determine defect characteristics via solution of inverse problems which involve the 2D wave equation in a domain which presents geometric complexities. We develop a technique for determining “optimal” placement of a receiver based on the geometry of the interrogation problem which involves a plane wave pulse and single receiver. A forward sim...
متن کاملSeeded free-electron and inverse free-electron laser techniques for radiation amplification and electron microbunching in the terahertz range
A comprehensive analysis is presented that describes amplification of a seed THz pulse in a single-pass free-electron laser (FEL) driven by a photoinjector. The dynamics of the radiation pulse and the modulated electron beam are modeled using the time-dependent FEL code, GENESIS 1.3. A 10-ps (FWHM) electron beam with a peak current of 50–100 A allows amplification of a 1 kW seed pulse in the fr...
